Caring for the smallest hearts

At Prisma Health Pediatric Cardiology, our physicians are trained to treat all conditions of the heart in children, from the womb into adulthood.

Our expertise includes diagnosing heart defects in utero and creating care plans for the delivery and first critical months of life before the babies are even born. We work closely with Prisma Health Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists to provide state-of-the-art fetal cardiac imaging, holistic counseling to parents, and care planning for babies with congenital heart disease (CHD). We also provide education and support for the family and are a critical part of the Prisma Health Fetal Care Team.

About Prisma Health Pediatric Cardiology–Spartanburg

Our pediatric cardiologists are board-certified or board-eligible and credentialed by the University of School of Medicine and the State of South Carolina, as well as fellows of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Cardiology.

We are active in quality initiatives, patient advocacy and medical education. Some of our faculty are active in the education of first- and second-year medical students. All are teaching faculty for third- and fourth-year medical students as well as our Children’s Hospital Pediatric Residency program, one of the top academic training programs in the nation by American Board of Pediatrics standards.

All of our pediatric cardiologists are active in our community, and several have done international medical care and education in international locations including the Caribbean, Western Africa and Southeast Asia.

Pediatric Cardiology is involved in a growing number of multidisciplinary services including the Children’s Hospital International Adoption Program, Muscular Dystrophy Clinic, and state-wide clinics for dysrhythmias and transplant care through the South Carolina Children’s Heart Program.

Conditions we treat include:
  • Chest pain.
  • Syncope (fainting/passing out).
  • Palpitations.
  • Heart murmurs.
  • Complex conditions such as congenital and acquired heart diseases.
Comprehensive heart care for young adults

Young adults with congenital heart disease receive the most comprehensive care available through our Prisma Health Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program, one of the first transitional care programs in the region.

This program provides rare services not typically provided locally, using resources from across the state and nation.

We have a nationally accredited lab registered to perform echocardiography (ECHO) on pediatric and adult CHD patients. We also provide other imaging modalities such as:

  • Cardiac MRI.
  • Hospital and ambulatory rhythm monitoring.
  • Cardiopulmonary stress lab testing.

Below are resources we have found valuable for our patients:

  • Cove Point Foundation provides a great overview of congenital heart disease – so does the Adult Congenital Heart Association.
  • The Marfan Foundation is dedicated to the life-threatening genetic disorder, Marfan Syndrome, that affects the body’s connective tissue. Connective tissue holds all the body’s cells, organs and tissue together. It also plays an important role in helping the body grow and develop properly. Features of the disorder are most often found in the heart, blood vessels, bones, joints and eyes.
  • Ehlers-Danlos syndrome is a Marfan Syndrome-related disorder, characterized by unstable, hypermobile joints, loose, “stretchy” skin and fragile tissues.
  • Cardiomyopathy is a condition in which the muscle of the heart is abnormal in the absence of an apparent cause. Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) occurs when there is an excessive thickening of the heart muscle.
  • The Emerson Rose Heart Foundation provides support for families affected by congenital heart defects.
  • Boston Children’s Hospital provides in-depth educational materials on various cardiac conditions.
