What should a baby wear coming home from the hospital? ›

Babies have sensitive skin, so you'll want to find clothes made from soft, high-quality fabric like 100-percent cotton to avoid itching and discomfort. (They layer nicely, too.)

Surprisingly to some, you're not responsible for bringing outfits for your baby to wear during your hospital stay. You can certainly overdo it when it comes to packing your hospital bag. Here's what not to bring to the hospital when you're ready to deliver: Too much clothing for you or the baby. Choose one outfit each and leave the rest at home.

Clothes wise, immediately post-partum or for coming home, I would recommend stretchy dresses or leggings and a large t-shirt or vest in the summer months. In the colder months, joggers, leggings, or trusty maternity dungarees are perfect.

It's good to check with your hospital first, but the hospital may provide you with baby diapers and wipes during your stay, a hospital gown, slippers, disposable underwear and pads, and basic toiletries.

After a normal vagin*l birth, you will probably stay in the birth room with your baby for about 2 hours. You may have a meal and a shower before transferring to the postnatal ward or going home. If you are going home 4 to 6 hours after birth, you might be able to stay in the birth room until discharge.

Try not to cover the stump with baby's diaper (plenty of newborn diapers come with a U-notch to ensure baby's umbilical cord isn't covered up). Use comfortably fitting—not tight—onesies, or just dress baby in diapers and T-shirts.

Clothes should be comfortable, soft and easy to take care of. Stretchy jumpsuits that fasten at the front are best, as well as tops with envelope necks, which are easier to get over your baby's head. Jumpsuits with zips can make dressing your baby quick and easy too. Clothes made from cotton are a good choice.

Each baby is different and grows at their own pace, so don't be alarmed if your baby quickly outgrows Newborn sized clothes. If your little one is in a higher percentile for weight or height, they may even be wearing 0-3 month clothes home from the hospital!
