{Leyon} 6 Week Old Newborn Baby Photography - {Photography} by Trudi Lynn Ann Arbor Mi Newborn | Maternity | Senior Picture Photographer (2024)

As a newborn photographer, I try to photograph most new babies during their first couple weeks, which is the time frame where I find them to be the most sleepy and tolerable of posing. Once they reach week three and are heading into week four they become much more alert and aware of the world around them and tend to become a little less tolerable of posing. While they are still tiny and cute, the newborn session can be much trickier at this point.

But as everything in life, things don’t always align perfectly and sometimes I’ll have parents reach out to me past this time. Depending on the circ*mstances (and if my schedule allows) I love to try to squeeze them in because it’s so important to still capture them in this previous timeframe. It worked out perfectly that I was available to capture Leyon on the day he was exactly 6 weeks old! While sessions at this age can vary with how much the baby will cooperate with our plans (we often have to allow for a more baby led session, and sometimes can’t capture specific poses), Leyon slept like a DREAM! He was chubby, sleepy, and perfect. I couldn’t have asked for a smoother session, and I’m so happy I was able to capture adorable newborn photos for his parents to cherish!

{LEYON}
DueDate: 02/01/2023
Birthday: 01/26/2023
BirthTime: 2:28 am
Weight: 7 lbs 0 oz
Length: 19.5 in

Pregnancy: Leyon was born on my 39w 0d. I did my routine weekly OB check-up that morning, and went on a small hike that afternoon. It was raining and the road was kind of muddy. We were taking pictures and suddenly noticed that a rainbow popped up behind a small waterfall – A big rainbow, nice and clear. It has been the first rainbow I saw in months, and my husband immediately said to me”Leyon is going to come down from the rainbow soon!”. We then returned to our car drove home. The drive took us like 20 min. The moment I hopped off our car and was walking to the door, I felt my water broke. I didn’t feel any pain at that moment and had enough time to go home and fetch everything I need – I even took a shower before heading to the hospital.

Later at the hospital, I was told that it was not my water but probably some other discharge. I was kept in hospitable for a few hours for further observation before I went into labor. I pushed for only like 20 min before Leyon was born. I believe that Leyon is such a good boy and he notified us of his arrival in such a peaceful way, “broke my water” on purpose, and urged us to go to the hospital long enough in advance so that his mommy can have a calm and prepared delivery!

Pregnancy cravings: Spicy food ! We finally managed to dine in at a restaurant on a weekend during my first trimester. However, I mysteriously stopped craving for any spicy food at all after having that meal. Weird – I always enjoy eating spicy, even before my pregnancy, but no longer now!

Naming Leyon: His name Leye was taken from a Classical Chinese: Zui Weng Ting Ji (Story of Old Tippler’s Pavilion by Ouyang Xiu from Song Dynasty.), my favorite Classical Chinese I learned in middle school. Word-for-word translated, the name means “joy and happiness”. Sense-for-sense translated, Leye means “satisfaction and happiness in whatever situation”. We hope that Leye grows up to be a happy and healthy man, regardless of his achievements.

We completely made up his English name, Leyon, based on his Chinese name! We want something that looks similar, but easier to be pronounced in Engligh (as we cannot figure out how to pronounce Leye in Engligh). Originally we were thinking about something like “Leon”, but we find it too French. We then switched to “Leyon” since we do not have any French origins. (P.S. We named our boy Leye at the very beginning of my pregnancy, long before we knew his gender. The English name will be Leia if our baby turns out to be a girl!)

Leyon’s name comes from in this Classical Chinese:

Thereafter, when the sun sets to the west in the mountain, people and their images begin to lie scattered. Then the prefecture chief begins to return and all his guests follow behind. The forest restores to be shaded and the birds begin to sing and fly up and down. The tourists have gone and then the birds can joy. However, the birds only know the joy of the mountains and trees, and they may be unaware of the people’s joy. People only know the joy of their tour when they followed the prefecture chief, but they may be unaware of the prefecture chief’s joy. Who can enjoy together with all his guests and followings when he is drunk, and can state the story when he is sobered? He is the prefecture chief. Who is the prefecture chief. He is Ouyang Xin who came from Luling.)

We hope that whatever Leyon wants to be, “birds”, “tourists”, or “chief”, he will remain a happy man!

Meeting Leyon: He didn’t seem to be crying a lot and only made small noises! I remember myself asking the doctors when Leyon was placed onto my chest “Isn’t he supposed to be crying?”, and was told that he was totally normal.

First thing we noticed about Leyon: He is surprisingly quiet, small, and wet.

Leyon’s features: He’s pretty skinny and has a pointed face and chin (which I really enjoy looking at, same as his father’s) in his first few weeks. However, he quickly becomes chubby as you can see from the photos (taken at his 6thweek). I am missing his pointed face and chin already!Well, hopefully they will come back when he grows older! But I also love his chubbiness right now!

Leyon wasn’t that interested in eating at all during his first few weeks of life. He lost abour 10% of his weight upon hospital discharge, and did not gain much weight back quick enough. He didn’t seem to drink enough milk, and we had to try really hard to wake him up and made him eat. At one point we had to use syringe to feed him because he just refused to eat on his own. We were worried that he slept too much and was too quiet for this age. I remember my husband and I both crying out of anxiousness one time after multiple pediatrics check-up and learned that he was still slow on weight-gain. We were told again and again to wake him up and feed him more.

Luckily things get much better after the first few weeks! His weight is back to normal now, and he is now a chubby happy little boy, as you can see from the photos!

Adorable things Leyon does: He used to be so quiet during his first few weeks of life! We learned that other newborns wake their parents up once or twice during the night to be fed, and cry many many times during the day. Leyon slept through the whole night without making a single noise, and didn’t cry much at all during the day (I love him being quiet, yet it also worried us badly! The pediatricians just say he has a unique personality haha!)

However after the first few weeks Leyon starts to be much more active, now not making us to sleep enough and always crying for mama!

“I love the photos Trudi took for us at Leyon’s 6thweek. Yet I still hope that I could take him for photography earlier (< 3weeks). Due to some personal reasons we were not able to take him for photos earlier (we were moving from a different state to MI with a newborn!), and I am so jealous when I see other newborns’ photos when they were still so little! Leyon looks so different now even it’s only a few weeks apart. But I am so happy with his photos now as well and that I can still have some newborn photos to cherish at his 6thweek!”
