Frequently Asked Questions
How many pies do you need for Thanksgiving?
This is ultimately a personal choice, but the fun of Thanksgiving is indulging in a variety of different flavors and having leftovers. Each 9-inch pie will yield about 10 generous slices, so I would count about 3 slices per person to allow for sampling and some leftovers. I love to send guests home with a few slices to enjoy later, perhaps when they aren’t so full!
The best way to send guests home with leftover pie
The absolute best way to send guests home with leftover pie at Thanksgiving is in plastic pie containers. You can purchase individual slice containers, but I find sending a variety home in one box is best. Alternate 4 slices of pie in rectangular containers or assemble a smorgasbord of pie slices in disposable pie containers with lids. You could also ask people to bring their own pie dish and send them home with slices in their own dish.
How far in advance can you make Thanksgiving pies?
Thanksgiving pies can be fully baked, cooled and frozen up to two months in advance! Unless you are making dozens of pies, I prefer to separate out the steps and bake the final pies one to two days before Thanksgiving. The crusts can be made and frozen up to a month in advance and any pre-baked fillings can also be made and frozen up to a month in advance. Then just assemble and bake the day before for the freshest pie!
How do you store leftover Thanksgiving pies?
Store leftover baked Thanksgiving pies at room temperature for up to 3 days or refrigerated up to a week. Unbaked pies like French Silk Pie or Cream Pies need to be refrigerated and will keep for a week.
